Apparently the night train I booked isn’t running anymore

Hello everyone.

I live in Canada and I need some help here.

On 26-OCT I booked a sleeper for two people using my Eurail Global Pass through RailEurope.com. The train I booked is the InterCityNotte number 797 from Trenitalia leaving Milano on 07-JAN at 22h18 and arriving Napoli Centrale next morning at 08h46. My credit card was charged and I received email confirmations from RailEurope and Trenitalia, with my reservation attached to those emails.

The problem I am experiencing is that this train disappeared from Trenitalia timetable, as if it wasn’t running any more on January 7th. I haven’t received any email neither from RailEurope nor from Trenitalia to inform me that the train was canceled.
I would like to know if it’s “normal” a train that was selling tickets disappear from the timetable or if I have to start to think about another train itinerary to get to Napoli.
Thank you in advance

Marcelo

I would wait a few days to see if it reappears. It happens that they do some minor rescheduling and while they are figuring it out, the trains disappear from the app (at least I think that’s what happens).
For example in December there are some days where it leaves Milano already at 21:35

Thanks @Dagi for your reply. I think the time change in December is due the timetable change that this year happens in December 14th. What worries me is that when I booked my sleeper it was an everyday running train but now there is a gap between January 6th and 23rd when it doesn’t run.

It appears that this train isn’t running anymore on January 7th according to the Deutsche Bahn website.

I will contact RailEurope to see if they can change my booking to the InterCityNotte 1963 leaving from Milano to Salerno the same night but at 20h10.

Thank you for all,

Marcelo

It appears that this train isn’t running anymore on January 7th according to the Deutsche Bahn website.

They just receive data from Trenitalia through the European Timetable Centre (MERITS), and should show the same information a bit later than Trenitalia themselves.

I'd also just wait a bit. Trenitalia have to run all domestic night trains daily (it's a contract with the government), so if there are engineering works they will most likely divert it.

It is somehow a mistery. On the SBB app you can find it on your date of travel and even on Trenitalia it’s running a few times during the period indicated as not running on DB.
I wouldn’t ultimately trust the info on DB, but rather try to call Trenitalia’s customer service.
Maybe someone more expert could explain how the other apps get their information.

After all you bought a ticket and usually there is some kind of info mail/message when a train is suspended and they reimburse your  money.

I responded before, but it somehow disappeared.
In fact it’s not like DB knows more about Ialien trains than Trenitalia and if you look for example at the Swiss FFS app, you still find your train.

After all, if your train is cancelled, you should get some kind of message and a refund.

Maybe try calling Trenitalia before rescheduling your trip.

Thank you @rvdborgt and @Dagi for your replies. The goal of this trip is to visit Pompei and allow my son to take his first night train. I had initially chosen the train going to Napoli because it would allow us a longer sleeping but the train going to Salerno is also a good match to our travel plans. We will be traveling 4 weeks in Europe but this is the only train that we will be taking. This is why I am a little bit stressed about it being cancelled and not being able to change the reservation to the train to Salerno if it gets fully booked. Thank you again for your help!

As above, give it a day or two and see what appears.

The notification that you see saying that train X runs on these days, not on these days relates to that specific timing of that specific train number.  In other words you could see another version of ICN797 that says “runs only 6 until 23 January” with a different departure time, or different routing once they have worked out their changes.

Don’t stress about getting to Pompeii . . . . there will be trains, you will get there.  If for some reason the sleeper doesn’t work out then you and your son will still get there.

If you found out on the night in question while standing on the platform in Milano Garibaldi that the train wasn’t running then it might be a suitable time to stress.

This is exactly the point, @zagmund. This is the only night train that we will be traveling on. This is why I booked it early. Having the experience of traveling in a night train for the first time is amazing and I don’t want him to miss it!

If you look now on Trenitalia you find it again, so probably it was only a little hiccup

Very good news, @Dagi! Thank you very much to you and all the others that helped with this matter. It was very kind of all of you. You can’t imagine how stressed I was about this matter.

And Italy always delivers strong emotions. Even before arriving there!!! 😂
