Baby in 1st class

Dan Olofsson

We are traveling with a 1st class InterRail Global Pass together with our 8-month-old baby. Since children under 4 are not eligible for their own pass, he travels on ours and sits in our lap.

However, we’ve been asked to either move to 2nd class or purchase an additional full-price 1st class ticket for our baby on three separate occasions in Poland (PKP Intercityand the Czech Republic (CD). While I understand that this may be in line with local regulations, the official InterRail rules clearly state that babies are allowed to travel in 1st class with someone holding a 1st class InterRail ticket.

Can anyone clarify how these local rules align with InterRail’s ticket rules?

Children under 4 travel for free, according to the T&Cs, although they don’t get to occupy a seat.

You can get a child pass (also valid for your baby) for free with an adult pass, which would give the child their own pass, and allow them to occupy a seat.

However this shouldn’t be necessary. Whatever PKP or ČD’s own policies for domestic tickets, you’re entitled to rely on the T&Cs from Interrail. I don’t see any specific exclusions for first class travel.

I would say you’re entitled to a refund for any extra fare paid, or compensation if you had to downgrade to second class.

Section 6 here: https://www.interrail.eu/content/dam/_new-structure/doc/terms/conditions_of_use_version_13.pdf

You might be able to get a free child pass if you contact Customer Services to prevent this from happening again.

Please contact customer service:

https://eurail.zendesk.com/hc/en-001/requests/new

Mention to them for each occasion:

Route, date, departure time, and where/when during the journey you were asked to either pay or move to 2nd class. (So they can contact the operators to explain the rules again.)

You should indeed not have to do that, so like @ralderton says, I'd also say you’re entitled to a refund for any extra fare paid, or compensation if you had to downgrade to second class.
