Answer

Basel SBB to Milano - change at Arth Goldau or Zürich?

I've got both these options showing as possible (and also changing at Chiasso for Milano). Both use a (the same!) Eurocity train for part of the route.

Any views or suggestions? Thanks. I'm travelling tomorrow.

I'd use an option with a regional train from Lugano, e.g.:

That means you don't need any reservations. This is possible each hour, sometimes with an extra (easy) change in Arth-Goldau.

Ah, okay, there are no reservations on the routes I'm being shown anyway.

One is Basel to Arth 10:03-11:45, then Arth to Chiasso 12:18-13:55.

The Zurich one is Basel 10:06, with an IC arriving 11:00, then changing to the EC 11:33, and again into Chiasso 13:55.

Then to suburban train into Milano.

PS: only getting into Basel 9:48 and have a reservation for Milano p gar to Florence at 15:48. That was flagged as needing one but that was the only one shown for the route.

Leaving Basel SBB at 10:03 gets you to Milano Centrale at 14:20 reservation-free. Also possible 1 hour later, see sbb.ch for timetables.

That leaves you with some buffer for any delays getting into Basel, since 9:48 looks like ICE 5 from Frankfurt.

Thank you. Good point about the potential delay with the German Ice.

But I spent time looking into options to get me to Milano p gar so I don't need to figure out another transfer (not inc. in my interrail ticket) across Milano .

That's why I was asking which of the two routes I mentioned might be better. Neither is shown as requiring any reservation and both get me straight into piazza Garibaldi.

The usual route is changing in Arth-Goldau. No need to be preoccupied about the short transfer time, it’s perfectly fine, just a few meters, no scales.

You didn't mention a station in Milan, so I just assumed Centrale.

To Porta Garibaldi, SBB suggest to change in Arth-Goldau, Lugano and Monza (dep. 10:03), or indeed in Zurich and Chiasso (dep. 10:33). I used sbb.ch, with "via Monza” to avoid the ECs in Italy.

I'd just take the first possible connection after arrival in Basel.

Thank you both very much, appreciate it. Sorry for not mentioning which station in Milano!

Thanks again - it's all worked and the idea to change again at Lugano and Monza was excellent, rvdborgt!
