On my route from Pisa to Milan, I’m planning on stopping off for a few hours in either Bologna and Verona or just going to Genova. Then, on my way to Salzburg from Milan, I either want to stop in Verona (providing I haven’t already done this) or Chiasso.

I’ll only be in these places for 3 hrs max each so was wondering which ones are worth visiting.

Have you been to Florence?

Pisa-Milan involves a change at Florence if you're taking the faster Frecciarossa. (It's direct on slower Intercity.)

Florence would have been my suggestion anyway, but seems especially logical here.

Pisa - Genova - Rome would be the easiest.

Chiasso is a bit out of the way and not worth it at all. You could either do Milan - Verona - Salzburg or Milan - Tirano - Bernina Line Chur - Buchs - Salzburg : very scenic
