Booking reservations via Eurail is not recommended. Elsewhere it's almost always cheaper, with better exchange/refund conditions, sometimes with the possibility to choose your seat and without artificial booking horizons.

Thanks for responding. I was looking to travel from Rome to Montreux, Switzerland on Dec 14 on the 9:25am. It seems I can book it for Dec 13 or any other date before that, but something happens on the 14th, and I can’t book any trains anywhere from that date onward. Hmmm? Kind of frustrating.

Most carriers implement their major timetable changes that specific weekend in December and as a result there can be delays in releasing tickets for the period after this.

The good news is that since tickets aren’t on sale yet, they can’t have sold out.

The medium news is that you may have some nervous days (or weeks) checking to see whether the tickets have been released yet.

The unknown-as-yet news is that the times of the trains may change between 13th and 14th December.  But in general for trunk routes there is often only minor changes, if any at all.

Having said all the above, checking on sbb.ch shows that there’s a 09:25 from Rome to Milan with a connection to Montreux departing at 13:10.

It looks like the timetable is released and you can book the train to Milan.  The onward trip is timetabled, but not yet bookable.

If I was you I would book/reserve the first train and rest easy in the knowledge that short of something very, very unlikely happening you will be able to get *some* train from Milan to Switzerland and connect in Switzerland to Montreux.

In all probability you will be able to get the 13:10 once tickets are released.

The 13:10 from Milan is bookable to Geneva and all other Swiss destinations, but not (yet) to Montreux for some reason.

In fact, you only need to book it until Domodossola, since reservations are only optional from there, and you save €3. The Swiss don't book reservations for domestic journeys (and IIRC this train can't be reserved within Switzerland), so you can stay in the same seat.

Best place to book these reservations is raileurope.com. Use "Add rail pass”.

Ok, thanks to your responses, I finally figured it out and can now stay an extra day in Rome. Yeah! I ended up booking with raileurope.com and used the "Add rail pass” button.
