Hi, This will be our 1st time using interrail and we are very nervous, I’m a disabled traveller and also easily confussed!. We are flying down to Rome for a few days an then plan on getting Interrail back to Zurick and flying home from there. We would really like to go through the Brenner pass as part of our journey, I have put this route in the planner.

Verona Porta Nuova

3h 31m

direct

Innsbruck Hbf

Is that correct? or is it a different route that we need?

We plan on staying overnight in Verona and Innsbruck.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Rachel

The rail planner is not the best source for planning a trip. Better look on the ÖBB or DB websites. But the information you got is correct. Direct trains between Verona and Innsbruck need betwenn 3 hours 31 minutes and 3 hours 35 minutes and all go via the Brenner pass, the only route which makes sense. The final destination of these trains is München (Munich).

Thanks, so I need to buy tickets on one of those websites? rather than through Interrail?

We are then travelling from Innsbruck to Munich airport to travel back to the uk.

Thanks

Rachel

Your interrail pass is your ticket. No need to buy extra tickets.

You can reserve seats for a small price on the respective websites of DB and ÖBB (select seat reservation only).

If you’lld have trouble getting on board of trains and need further assistance with travelling, you can best contact the railway companies: https://www.oebb.at/en/reiseplanung-services/barrierefrei-reisen,  https://int.bahn.de/en/booking-information/accessible-travel or https://www.trenitalia.com/en/information/passengers-with-disabilities-or-reduced-mobility.html

Best read this (rather extensive) guide as well, as it’ll remove a lot of confusion: https://www.seat61.com/how-to-use-an-interrail-pass.htm. The country specific pages are also something to check to prepare yourself properly if you feel insecure about travelling by train.

Brenner trains operated jointly by ÖBB and DB are like also other trains between Italy and Austria a special case. You need to pay a supplement when travelling with an Interrail pass. You could to this through interrail, but they charge a booking fee and their train data are not always up to date. So railway company websites are recommended.

I do not know how the procedure is on the DB website. On the ÖBB website (https://shop.oebbtickets.at/en/) it is the following (recommended for trains to Italy only):

First, you do not need an account.

Do a search for trains on the date you wish to travel.
Do not check “seat reservation only”
Change travellers to the required number and select Interrail/Eurail discount
Select the train you wish to take

On the next screen select the class of your pass, and check the seat reservation checkbox if you want one.

Pay and select the method of ticket delivery. If you do not have the ÖBB App (you do not need it) select PDF (collecting at an Austian train station is not an option, if you are in Italy). Note that you can get a (partial, if any) refund only, as long as you have not downloaded the PDF.

For Innsbruck-München you may just board any train (also those coming from Italy) without supplement or reservation. If you wish to reserve a seat on the ÖBB website you can in principle do the same as above. The straigt forward way ist to check the reservation only box, not bother with discounts (the reservation fee ist always €3,-) and go ahead. The ÖBB website suggest München, if you enter Munich, but you have to accept the suggestion.

Hope this helps,
Andreas
