Only optional reservation. Not necessary. Most free, non-reserved seats are found in carriage 22. Just hop on, and find a free (non-reserved) seat, look out for the green displays above the seats.
Mondays shouldn’t be too busy on this train. If I would be travelling tomorrow as well on the ICE Brussels-Frankfurt, I also wouldn’t make a reservation at all.

If the travellers with seat reservation board in Aachen, you’ll need to give way and find another seat.
If they don’t show up, you’re lucky and you can keep sitting where you are.
