Question

Caledonian Sleeper and CET

Hello, we were planning on taking the Caledonian Sleeper from Edinburgh to London before travelling onwards to Strasbourg. The Sleeper leaves Edinbugh at 23.40pm but I understood that the travel day starts at 00.00 CET so I could enter train manually onto mobile pass as leaving at 00.40pm, avoiding using 2 travel days.

I am now reading the rules changed as of January 2025 and now it is local time that counts. The information on the website still refers to pass running on CET but terms and conditions says use local time.

I am very confused, can anyone help?

This has been a bit of a problem for a while, where the behaviour of the app doesn't agree with the T&Cs.

My understanding is that you're indeed right: a travel day starts and ends at midnight local time.

So Southbound you will use 2 days, but northbound you'll use 1.

There is a separate bug which sometimes affects people whose current timezone isn't CET. I get it on my iPhone, a friend doesn't get it on his Android.

@Eurail Community Moderator  can you shed any light? If there's out of date info on the website, it needs to be removed.

But at the same time, as long as it hasn't been removed or changed, you can't blame people who use midnight CET as the start of a new travel day.

Ii asked Interrail through help form and received the following:

I interpreted this as our travel day starting at 11.40pm UK time (00.40pm CET)  so would be ok but have now received a further email stating my journey would infact be 2 travel days.

So still confused and would just really like to be clear on the conditions of travel before we book.

I think that's incorrect from Customer Service. It doesn't agree with the Conditions of Use

I agree with @rvdborgt Take the whichever interpretation works the best for you.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your patience. This topic has already been escalated in 2024 and reviewed by the product owner. I’ve requested an update and will share any new information as soon as I receive it.

Cheers,

Camilo

I received a very helpful email from Interrail this morning confirming that it was acceptable to use the workaround on the mobile app entering  the train manually using the CET departure time. Thank you everyone for your help.
