Hey,

we have issues concerning the connection between Amsterdam and Copenhagen on the 3rd of August.

We are currently only finding connections with at least 7 changes and we know that there are direct connections from Hamburg to Copenhagen on other days as well as quite good connections from Amsterdam to Copenhagen with only changes in Hannover and Hamburg. We don’t understand why this connection is so difficult on that day and why there are no direct connections on that Sunday from Hamburg to Copenhagen. Can somebody tell us the reason for that?

And does someone maybe know any good connections?

We’re from Germany so we know, that Deutsche Bahn is not really reliable. That’s why we are searching for connections with a fair amount of layover but that are still manageable in a day. We are also open to overnight connections from Saturday to Sunday, as long as the last major connection starts on Saturday so we only need one Travelday.

Thank you very much for your help!

Hello @Lilli Wagner

You can find the reason here:

I guess that you have also engineering works in Denmark with replacement buses. You can find the actual connections on Bahn.de. No other route is available, the line to Puttgarden is currently closed.

And the confirmation from Gemini:

A "Togbus GRØN" in Denmark is a specific type of rail replacement bus service operated or commissioned by DSB (Danish State Railways).

Let's break down the name:

  • Togbus: This is the standard Danish term for a rail replacement bus. "Tog" means "train" and "bus" means "bus". These are used when train services are interrupted due to planned engineering works ("sporarbejde"), unforeseen incidents, or other disruptions.

  • GRØN: This means "GREEN" in Danish. In the context of DSB's replacement buses, "GRØN" (along with other colors like RØD/Red, BLÅ/Blue, etc.) is used as a line identifier to help passengers easily distinguish between different replacement bus routes that might be operating in the same area. For example, the "GRØN" route might serve one set of stops, while the "BLÅ" route serves another.

You could try heading further east (Amsterdam-Berlin is running) and then getting an overnight ferry to Ystad or Trelleborg from one of the Baltic ports.  It’s then a relatively short/cheap train up to Malmo & Copenhagen.

Long way around?  Yes.

Will get you there with less connections?  Most likely.

Will avoid bus transfers on a hot sunny Sunday in August?  Definitely.

Sounds doable with a break in Hamburg:

- IC Amsterdam Centraal - Hannover Hbf 08:00 - 13:11 -> taking a long route due to works

- ICE Hannover Hbf - Hamburg Hbf 13:20 - 14:36 -> likely late by a couple of minutes (there are other trains)

- frequent S-Bahn to Altona (every 5 min, 12 min journey)

- if by miracle everything goes well: 15:02 EC to Fredericia, replacement bus, train

- if not, enjoy the 2 hour break in Hamburg, take the 17:02 EC and claim 24€ from Interrail (2h delay at your final destination)

Don't forget to book both the IC and EC now as they require reservations and will sell out.

As zagmund said, there are other potentially interesting options like ferries.
