Does GWR uses a travel day of Eurail Pass?

Hello folks,

I’m wondering if I book a reservation for GWR in UK (return trip from London to Oxford), would that use one day of my Global Eurail Pass (Flexi pass)? I have already planned out all travel days for my pass and I won’t be able to use the pass if GWR requires one.

Thanks.

I’m not sure if I follow you on this one? Reservations are not linked to the pass what so ever.

The pass = your ticket. Reservations (for free and only optional on domestic UK routes) are not tickets, it just guarantees you a seat.

So for every train you take, with reservations, you need to add the journey to your pass and activate a travel day to travel.

You can’t travel with just a reservation, since you’ll be considered as a fare dodger.

London-Oxford isn’t that far, so you might want to buy a normal ticket. If you take the slower train it’s 8-12 Quid one way bought in advance, 35 quid for the faster train one way (only 30 min quicker than the slow train, not worth that big price difference).

Anyway this relatively short journey is not worth the cost of a pass day if it’s your only journey of the day. Buy your ticket (for the slower service) a couple of days in advance on www.GWR.com or in a GWR- station.

As @BrendanDB said, you must always add trains to your pass and have an active day while using it for travel, to do otherwise is fare evasion and could see you paying a lot more.

There are 2 routes from London to Oxford, GWR from Paddington and Chiltern from Marylebone.

An off-peak day return that can be used on both routes is £36, this can be used on any train leaving Paddington after 09.20 or leaving Marylebone after 08.30. You can return on any train.

This is an unrestricted fare, it is always available at the same price and can be bought immediately before travel at a ticket office, machine or online.

Cheaper “Advance” fares are often available but be careful using these as they are only valid on one specific train, if you use them on any other you will be refused or if you do manage to travel on the wrong train you may be subject to a fine.
