If you are traveling to Scotland and want to travel to Ireland and London too during the trip, would you rent a car or do Eurotrail only? I have this desire to sit oceanside and listen to the seagulls and watch the fishing ports.

Eurail works great in the UK: plenty of trains, optional reservations, simply hop on hop off. Very enjoyable! Meanwhile tickets are really expensive without Eurail…

A car isn't necessary in my opinion. Buses will bring you to tiny places if there's no train station.

There are multiple ferry routes across the Irish Sea, well equipped for foot passengers too. Holyhead is the prime example where the train station and the ferry harbour are in the same building.
