Eurail Global Pass – App wrongly using both inbound and outbound days, can’t complete my trip

Hi everyone,

I'm having a frustrating issue with my Eurail Global Pass, and I'm hoping someone here can help or share experience.

Here’s my situation: everything is already booked and non-refundable, so I can’t change my itinerary. My trip is:

Bordeaux → London → Copenhagen → Bordeaux

All of this was planned carefully to save money using the Pass.

Now the problems:

  • ✅ The first leg Bordeaux → London uses my outbound day, which makes sense as I’m leaving my country of residence (France).

  • ❌ Then I go London → Copenhagen, without stopping in France at all. Still, the app tries to use an inbound or outbound day, probably just because the train crosses French territory. That doesn’t seem fair, since I don’t board, exit, or stop in France.

  • ❌ Finally, Copenhagen → Bordeaux takes over 25 hours and includes a scheduled stop in Strasbourg. Because this trip spans two calendar days, the app sees it as two separate inbound travel days, which obviously isn't how the rule is supposed to work. It’s just one continuous return trip.

I’ve done everything according to the rules, booked my itinerary carefully, and made sure my travel days align with what’s allowed. That’s why it’s confusing to see the app block my trip, even though it clearly follows the intended use of the Pass.

Has anyone faced a similar situation? Is there any workaround or override possible?

Thanks in advance for any help 🙏

You can’t purchase an another travel day. You could try contacting customer services to see if there’s anything they can do, but as @Al_G says, this is how it’s supposed to work. Any travel in your own country is limited to two days.

You could see how much it will cost to buy a Eurostar ticket from London to Brussels. They can be reasonably cheap (last minute) if you search for Eurostar Snap fares

It might not seem fair but as the train from London passes through France then it will use your second home country day, those are the rules..

The Same applies to changing trains after midnight, it will require a second pass day.

Thanks a lot for your reply.

I understand that those might be the rules, but honestly, they are extremely poorly explained on the official website. If this is a common issue, it would be helpful if Eurail made it clearer upfront.

Now I’m stuck having to pay for another pass, even though I’ve already invested a lot into carefully planning and booking all these non-refundable trips.

In hindsight, it seems Eurail might not have been the right choice for this itinerary but it was certainly marketed as an easy and flexible way to travel across Europe by train.

Since I’m quite confused by how the app handles this, could you please share more information on how to purchase an additional travel day, or how this could work in my case?

Thanks again for any help 🙏

Thanks for the info!

Since I already have Eurostar tickets (which don’t mention Eurail at all, unlike SNCF tickets), do you know if I can simply not add them to my Eurail Pass? And just show my Eurostar ticket separately during inspection, along with my Eurail Pass for the rest of the trip?

As for the return leg via Strasbourg, I’ll try to get in touch with Eurail’s customer service to explain the situation. Do you happen to have their email or a direct contact? I’ve looked around but couldn’t find anything clear.

Thanks again for your help!

You don’t have a Eurostar ticket. You have a passholder fare, which is only valid with a pass.

Thank you for clarifying that.

Would you happen to have a phone number or email address for Eurail customer service so I can reach out and explain my situation directly?

Thank you.

I don’t think they publish contact details like that - you have to submit a request through the website

Thank you.
