My daughter and myself are planning a train travel journey around Europe from the start of January for one month. I would like to know:

  1. what is the weather is like at that time of the year
  2. Is it easier to get around during this time of the year eg: due to snow or crowds

We have only been to UK and France during the summer months but never been to Europe during this time of the year. A bit lost as to what we should do.

Thank you

Apart of the obvious drawbacks, cold and short days, I think January is a good months to discover cities that otherwise are too crowded, like Venice or Rome. I’ve been there in December, it was still lively but not crowded.
Places in the mountains are pleasurable with snow and usually you can find prepared walking trail and sled runs with rental (Preda-Bergün is great).

Of course good weather isn’t guaranteed, but especially in the alps there are usually more bright sunny days as grey ones, while there are other places that are notoriously grey and foggy, but when you are exploring a city that doesn’t matter too much I guess.

More problematic than the weather, I find the reduced daylight hours, since it limits the possibilities of doing stuff.

Europe is a big place. The weather also varies a lot, from mild and sunny in southern Italy to bitter cold in Lapland. You'll have to be a bit more specific if you want to know more.
