Gastronomic Rail Journey - Route Suggestions Welcome

Hello everyone

My husband celebrates his 70th birthday next year and I’d like to organise a trip through various European destinations by train and at least one sleeper train.  As we haven’t been to Eastern Europe, I’m thinking of flying to Bulgaria or Poland and kicking off from there and working our way back to Brussels for a Eurostar back to London. I’d like a stopover in each location of say, 2 days but with trains between destinations having a proper dining car with a lovely culinary experience (1st class, I’m assuming) on each leg.  I don’t know whether it’s better to book individual journeys and accommodation at each stopover or whether to buy a Eurail pass. I’m roughly thinking that the whole trip will be about 10-14 days. Any advice on routing and/or ticketing most welcome from you seasoned travellers to help me make a truly memorable trip.

Looking forward to you sharing your wisdom.  Many thanks.

The Polish restaurant cars get very good reviews, and aren’t expensive.

Most sleepers in Western Europe have no restaurant car, or indeed any catering at all. Central Europe definitely has much more on both day and night trains. When you’re researching trips, you can put your train number into this website, and see the seats, the restaurant car and often the menu too.

If you don’t mind splashing out, and if you’re considering routing through Switzerland, then a ride on the Glacier Express in Excellence Class could fit the bill. It’s exceptionally expensive (570 CHF reservation fee, on top of a first class pass!), but gets many glowing reports. You certainly won’t be the only ones celebrating a big birthday.

On the line Chur to St. Moritz there is the the old fashioned dining car Gourmino. Very nice Belle-Epoque vibes and stunning views.

The Corona train from Brasov in Romania to Budapest should tick a few of your boxes - it’s a sleeper and it has a proper restaurant car.  We took it recently and really enjoyed it.

As mentioned above, many other sleepers will have no/limited dining facilities.

It’s not quite on your indicated route, but you could also consider the sleepers in Finland - they all have a dining car as far as I know.  The cars are also modern and you can book rooms with en-suite showers.

UK first class services (LNER, Avanti, some others, not Northern or Southern) have very good dining services, so you could also use your two “own country” days to do a gastronomic micro-tour.  Those of us based outside the UK have been known to spend several days on UK rails maximising the freebies.
