I entered a comment for the Giveaway but now I’m inundated by pestering emails notifying me of other people’s reply. I want to stop them instead of just allocating to junk. How do I stop these unwanted, unsolicited and unrequested notifications, please?

Just hit the star icon to unsubscribe from that topic. Yeah i woke up to over 700 notification (thankfully only 1 email as i had it set to “Notify me only about the first new reply since my last visit” )

Also you may want to set "Add topic to subscriptions which you reply to” to No.
