How Do Non-Reserved Eurail Train Sectors Actually Work?

I'm planning a multi-week Eurail pass trip (First Class) and several of my train segments don't offer seat reservations. I've got my pass loaded, but I'm confused about the practical side of adding trains, booking validation, and baggage.

My travel agent's explanation: Load the sector, show your pass to the conductor when they board, sit in any available seat.

**But here's what I still don't understand:**

1. **How do I load the correct trains?** I have specific train numbers from my booking. When I add a sector to my Eurail Pass (like City A to City B on a specific date), how do I make sure I'm loading the exact train I booked? Can I input the train number, or does the system match it automatically?

2. **First Class on non-reserved trains:** If there's no assigned seat, how do I know which compartments are First Class? Will the conductor point me to them, or should I be able to identify them myself?

3. **Does the pass need to be "activated" before boarding?** Or do I just load the sector and board normally, then show the pass to the conductor? How do they verify I'm supposed to be on that train?

4. **Where does baggage go?** Can I bring my luggage on board, or do I need to check it? Is there a dedicated luggage area?

I've searched forums and the Eurail website, but these practical details seem to be missing. Has anyone traveled this way before? What should I know?

  1. You just search in the Rail Planner app for your origin and destination, and pick the departure time you want (or, the departure time you've already reserved seats for, if it’s a reserved train). There is no ‘booking a train’.
  2. It will usually be written on the outside of the carriage. In some parts of Europe, you'll see a yellow stripe painted on the outside. Often it’s marked on the screens on the platform where first class will be. If you’re not sure, ask
  3. Yes, absolutely. You must activate before boarding, otherwise you’re boarding without a ticket. Guards can see the exact time you activated.
  4. There’s no checked luggage. You board with it, and find a place to store it. Usually big storage areas at the ends of the carriage, and smaller space between and above the seats.
