Question

Inbound / outbound help required please.

Hi, 2 adults and 2 children with flexi tickets.

would like to travel from Newark UK to London Kings Cross, then walk over the road to St Pancras and get the train to Paris Nord.

Then the reverse on our return.

I have been told by Interrail this is not possible.

they have said Paris to London would be the inbound, so cannot then go from King’s Cross to Newark. They said it would use 2 travel days ( it is all within 1 day midnight to midnight) and that I will have to pay separately for King’s Cross to Newark.

Yet their email says we can use as many trains as needed to complete our journey, as long as within 1 day.

I cannot therefore understand why we cannot go from Newark to KX, then St Pancras to Paris as one out bound, then the reverse as our 1 inbound.

can someone please explain???

is it because we change stations in London?

so they think we are stopping off in London?

or is the advice they have given wrong.

many thanks in advance

Do you have a global Interrail Pass and is both the trip to London and from London to Paris on the sam day?

In what context have you been given this info? It seems like a misunderstanding. If you have global passes and the trip from Newark to Paris is done in one day, you should be fine.

On an inbound or outbound day, you can use as many trains in your country of residence as you like.

So what did you ask Interrail and what was the exact answer?

Thank you both.

We have Interrail Global Tickets, 15 days within 2 months.

On 29/7 we want to go from Newark to Kings X, St Pan to Paris Nord. All in the afternoon with arrival in Paris on the same day as our departure from Newark.

want to do the reverse on 6/9/26. Leaving Paris at 6 pm and arriving at Newark 10pm. Again all on same day.

we have seat reservations for all of these

the other day, I was manually entering the inbound 6/9 Paris to London train on the app. This is because I could not see the train on the planner. I had already a couple of months ago manually added the outbound 29/7 Eurostar train for the same reason.

it was when I was adding this inbound Eurostar train that a message popped up on the app asking if the journey was in my home country. I said yes. Then I was told I had too many inbound and outbound journeys (the Newark to London and back journeys already on the app).

I was convinced this is incorrect.

So anyway I then added the 6/9 Eurostar via the planner when I became aware that the departure times are 35mins earlier than stated to allow for boarding and passport control, so our train was in fact on the planner.

when I added the trip from the planner I did not get the error message.

however I just wanted to double check all was ok with my journeys so I messaged Interrail. And they have said I cannot do the Newark to London, London to Paris. I screenshot my ticket and sent it so they can see the timings etc.

I have read online that the app is glitchy re having 2 or more manually entered journeys, so I was expecting Interrail so say the error message was a glitch.

I am 99.9% percent sure I can make the journeys, but because of that original error message I want to double check. Now Interrail are saying I cannot.

thank you so much.

This is the reply from Interrail:

Thank you for getting back to us with the screenshots.

We can see that you'd like to go from Paris Nord to London St Pancras and then from London Kings Cross to Newark Northgate.

Please note that if you go from Paris Nord to London St Pancras, which is your country of residence -you will use one inbound token, which is also a travel day.

Then, if you go from London Kings Cross to Newark Northgate - you will also use your outbound token, which is also another travel day.

So, you will not be able to travel from London Kings Cross to Newark with your Pass because you can only use your Interrail Global Pass in your own country during two travel days of your choice for one outbound journey (leaving your own country) and one inbound journey (entering your own country). These travel days are not additional to the number of travel days you purchase.

You can take as many trains as necessary to complete these journeys on each of those two travel days. You can also use them in the order you prefer (for example, you may use the inbound trip before the outbound one if that better suits your travel plans).

However, you are not allowed to make any extra trips within your own country using the Pass.

You would need to purchase separate full-fare tickets for any additional travel in your own country of residence.

You can read this page for more details.

We hope this information is helpful to you. If you need further help or have questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

The app behaviour as describes when entering a manual, inbound journey could be a bug. It should only use an extra inbound day if you add London to Newark on a different date than Paris-London. Are you positive you didn't do that?

Also you seem to have activated your pass and travel days already. This is not recommended at all, except to test or play around. You can only cancel activation before validity starts, which is at midnight. If anything happens after that, it will be too late to cancel, the clock will start ticking and you can loose travel days. After you're done playing around, the best is to cancel pass activation and only activate again on the day you start your trip.

Hi, thank you for your reply.

I am 100 % certain the journeys were /are all on the same day. This is why I am so confused.

thank you for the activation comment. I thought in order to start adding journeys and get tickets, that I had to activate my pass? Is this not correct? Should I deactivate? Will I lose my journeys?

Many thanks again.

You need to activate your pass and travel day to get your ticket in the app indeed, but there's no reason to do that in advance.

You don't need to activate your pass to book reservations.

You are right. You can make the journey as described. The reply from Interrail is entirely wrong! You would only use a second inbound/ outbound day if you were spending the night in London.

By the sounds of it, the app is working as expected, and you don't need to add any journeys manually now that you’ve discovered the weird 35 minute offset that Interrail adds!

So just disregard the incorrect advice from Customer Service. @Eurail Community Moderator - perhaps you could look into why the app and Customer Service both gave @Maryhelpneeded the wrong advice?

-

By the way, unless there are delays you'll almost certainly be able to make the 2003 to Newark (which is a quicker train too).

It’s not wrong, as such. It's just not necessary. Most regulars on here advise against it, because your plans may change.

Once you've ticked over midnight on a travel day, or the first day of activation of your pass, the clock has started and you can’t undo it.

Deactivating won;t lose any journeys you've saved, and it has no effect on any reservations you've made.

Thank you for this reply, too. It is what I believe to be correct and I think Interrail are incorrect in their responses to me. I just don’t want to arrive in King’s Cross on 29/7 to be told I need to pay full price for our x4 Eurostar tickets!!
