Hello my name is Cathal I'm 30 and I am keen on travelling from the 8th August for two weeks.  First time interrailing can anyone advise - is my travel plan interesting and doable? What am I to expect, it's my first time travelling solo and I am someone who would be classed as a sociable person would hostels be recommended as accommodation? And is anyone planning to travel? Cheers for the advice - Cathal

My travel plan - Vienna - Munich - Zurich - Milano - Nice - Barcelona

Interesting - yep.

Doable - should be.  How long have you allowed for the journey between Nice & Barcelona?

You will have a good few travel days in 2 weeks (but that’s the fun of interrailing), so make sure you give yourself some time to actually enjoy your cities once you have arrived there.  Pick hotels near the stations or near an easy to reach metro/u-bahn/tram station.

From memory, all those city pairs (other than Nice-Barcelona) are connected by direct and good trains.  Given that you are traveling right in the middle of summer you should (I would) reserve seats for all of them.  While interrailing is great fun, doing it while standing in a packed carriage is not.

I'm staying 2 nights in Nice and 3 nights in Barcelona in most of the places I am staying 2 nights at every place. Do you think that is enough time at a city?  What are hostels like staying I'm torn between hostels or hotels in regards to comfort but at the same time kind of want to do this trip on a budget. Thanks for the reply

It's very ‘city heavy’. I might be tempted to cut out Munich or Vienna, and spend the time somewhere smaller instead if you want some variety? Remember, these trains pass through hundreds of interesting places too.

Swiss mountains, or somewhere in the South of France, for example.

Some places, you can visit quite easily for ar hours while traveling. For example, I spent half a day in Nice on the way between Menton and Avignon, add that was enough to see it. (Although I could've spent a couple of days there)

Hostels are good to connect with other people but don’t expect too much privacy and sleep during summer as many party people will be on the move.

as ralderton suggested - maybe add some smaller place to your route to have some more diversity :)

Interlaken is a very busy place but close to many beautiful mountain places, if you want to avoid the crowds, then go to some other areas like Graubünden for example (Val Müstair e.g.)
