Is Ljubljana - Trieste included in the global pass? If yes, do I have to record it manually in the application?

Yes, it’s valid. What date, and which route are you taking?

You can always add a train manually if you don’t see it in the Rail Planner, but sometimes it’s best to wait until closer to the time.

Thanks for the information. I plan to travel on June 3rd or 4th with the 7.42 train and via Villach.

Yes, just add the trains to Rail Planner.

You need to pay a supplement for the Railjet from Villach. You can pay on board, but better to buy it online in advance for €10. You can buy it at https://shop.oebbtickets.at/en/ticket. Add your pass where it says 1 x Adult, and don't tick the seat reservation only. You can add a seat reservation for €3 if you wish.

Interrail should be able to sell this too, but it doesn't seem to be working today.

If you buy that supplement from an Italian ticket office, then you get a reservation with it free of charge.

June 4th is a public holiday in Austria and there will probably more passengers aboard railjet 131 than ususal. But I do not think it will be crowded beyond Villach. A nice alternative route would be leaving train 318 to Villach already in Jesenice and change to a Bohinj line train to Nova Gorica. If train 318 is delayed and you miss the connection you could stay on this train and continue to Vilaach where you have plenty of time to catch the railjet and buy the supplement either online or at the ticket office. From Nova Gorica station in Slovenia you have to change to Gorizia Centrale station in Italy. There are two bus lines connecting the two stations, the INT (international) bus which stop is reached from the station building by the underpass leading to the other side of the tracks and Gorizia city bus no. 1, with bus stops on Italian territory in via foscolo or via caprin. The INT bus runs every 30 minutes, the city bus about every 20 minutes. You may pay by contactless card aboard the buses.

Going via Villach is a big detour but this is what most planners will show since there are no good train connections (even though the rails are there!).

I’d follow Andreas’ advice to travel via Nova Gorica/Gorizia. You can either travel via Jesenice (even though there will be partial bus replacement on 4-5th June, a train will wait in Bled Jezero don’t worry. Timetable: https://potniski.sz.si/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/novKopija-datoteke-Jesenice-Bled-Jezero-junij-2026.pdf) or via Sezana (departure from Ljubljana at 07:40).

Last option would be a trip on the scenic Ljubljana - Koper line:

  • IC Ljubljana - Koper 09:10 - 11:50
  • Bus Koper - Trieste 12:30 - 13:09, 14:00 - 14:39 or later (4.40€)

Of course there are also much faster direct buses but that’s cheating! :p Interrail not valid.
