I live in rural France , - it will take at least two train journeys to get to the final train that will take me across the border into Switzerland. If these are all part of my outward journey itinerary  on the same day, is this allowed?

Hi. Please read the Interrail Tariff (conditions)

https://www.interrail.eu/content/dam/_new-structure/doc/sup/CoU%20V.10-4_10_23.pdf

Youll find your answer in 5.2. But it is useful to know the other rules as well.
