As suggested by the team at Interrail, me and my friend are now using the online trip planner to support us in planning trains and journeys. We are struggling on planning our route from Nice to Rome. The only option its suggesting is 35 hours long via switzerland. Please can you advise us on the best way to do this travel day. We are aware its a 12 hour journey. We have a global pass.

Your best Route will most likly be via Ventimiglia and Milano arround 9-10 hours. It requires 2 reservations for the italian trains (IC 3€ and highspeed train 13€).
You are most likly just looking at a date too far in the future as Danhiel mentioned.
When do you want to travel? It is probably too early, timetables in Italy are not published.
