Answer

Night train bed reservation (Paris to Nice)?

I got a global pass and want to travel from the UK to Nice.

I’m hoping to get the 20:57 train from Paris Austerlitz to Nice Ville on the 16th of October.

When I log in to book a seat this is what I get. I’m assuming the most expensive option is a bed but I’m not sure. I did reach out to the helpdesk and they told me to use Rail Europe to book a bed (apparently they have no clue what the options shown in the screenshot are). However Rail Europe does not find the whole of my journey. Do I need to book seats both in Interrail and Rail Europe for the various legs of my journey?

How does this work on the day? Do I have to use both the Interrail app and the Rail Europe app to show I have a valid pass and bed reservation? Or will my reservation in Rail Europe sync to the Interrail app?

I’m trying to ask the helpdesk but it’s all very tedious with a 24h delay and often only half an answer so I thought I’d come ask here in case anyone knows.

This train is available on Rail Europe with three options:

You must show the QR code of the reservation and the QR code in Rail Planner app. No synchronization is possible.

@Danhiel Thanks. I meant the whole of my journey is not coming up in a search on Rail Europe. I would be starting from the UK and for some reason, the search says no journeys are available.

So if I understand I need to:

  • Book the seats for the UK part of the journey (including Eurostar) on the Interrail website.
  • Book the bed for Paris to Nice on the Rail Europe website.
  • On the day of travel, use both Rail Europe and Interrail to show the global pass and the seat reservations.

Reservations are always separate from your pass, and it’s generally wisest to make reservations for each leg separately (and not via Interrail at all). They won’t sync to your app or pass. They’re usually emailed to you as a PDF, which you can show when needed.

I would book both your Eurostar and your SNCF train on the Rail Europe website (separately).

Seat61 has an excellent guide to reservations. Where they are needed, how much, and where to book them.

@ralderton thanks for the tip. I assumed it’d be easier to have it all in one place.

I’ve only used a pass once before so it’s all new to me.

I’ll get booking on Rail Europe tomorrow morning.

That's often not possible. There's no single website that can book them all. Reservations for the UK can't be booked on the Interrail website. In addition, Interrail charges an extra €2 per person and train.

On Rail Europe, always pay in euro, because prices in other currencies are around 5% higher.

I tend to save the PDFs into the Books app on my phone. Sounds weird, but it works - they’re all in one place, and they’re saved locally so that there’s no risk of connectivity problems.

@AnneLaure07

You can also import the Eurostar reservations into the Eurostar app and French reservations into the TGV INOUI PRO app (but I’m not sure if it works with the Intercités de nuit) and generate cards into the Wallet from these apps.

That also works. Until now, all SNCF reservations I made through Rail Europe showed up in the TGV Inoui Pro app automatically: TGV, Intercité (mandatory or optional reservations), Intercité de nuit. IIRC even TERs with mandatory reservations, although I can’t check that anymore.

Two months ago, it didn’t work for TER NOMAD (Normandie), but it may have been a temporary problem.

All above answers are very helpful.  However, I am trying to book a couchette on the night train from Paris Austerlitz to Hendaye on Wednesday 17th September.  I am only being given a option of seats.  Any tips would be very welcome.  I have read Seat 61 but can’t get a definitive answer.  Many thanks

@Deirdre Clarke

Couchettes are currently sold out. You could reserve a seat now and try later to reserve a couchette again, it may be possible that someone cancel his ticket. You could obtain a refund of the seat reservation
