Hi there,
My friend and I are travelling from London to Paris on 28 August 2026. We have already booked the Eurostar separately and will be arriving in Paris at 21:00 on Friday 28 August. We have accommodation booked for two nights in Paris, followed by three nights in Nice.
After Nice, we are hoping to continue our trip through Milan, Rome, Venice, Innsbruck (Austria), and Zagreb (Croatia), before flying back to London on 12 September.
We have purchased a 5‑day travel pass within one month, but we are unsure whether this will be sufficient for our itinerary or if a 7‑day pass would have been more appropriate. Could you advise whether our planned route is feasible with the pass we currently hold?
We would also appreciate some clarification on how a “travel day” works, as we are finding this a little confusing.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Kind Regards,

Eleanor and Emily.

If you count a travel day between every destination 5 days won’t be enough, but since you travel between major cities in Italy, it’s advisable to get separate tickets for these legs.

Between Milan, Rome and Venice you’ll have lots of high speed trains, FrecciaRossa and Italo, the former charges a reservation fee and the later isn’t in the Interrail network. But they both sell cheap tickets, if you buy in advance (for example Milano-Venice for about 13€ with Italo). It’s worth to get their newsletter, there’s always some code to get a discount.

You need a travel day for each day on which you plan to take a train using the interrail pass. (Only the time you enter each train is relevant, so trains that run overnight still only use 1 travel day(not relevant in your case)

The journeys you use your interrail pass for are not required to be continous (You can totally use other means of transportation inbetween or normal train tickets on your cheaper journeys to get away with less travel days). Just replace the cheapest journey on your trip. Dagi already gave you a recommendation which one that could be. Just keep in mind a fixed cheap ticket gives you no flexibility regarding that journey.

Also you can plan with the following reservation costs:

  • 10/20€ for the TGV from Paris to Nice
  • 3€ for the IC from Ventimiglia to milano
  • 13€ for each highspeed trains in italy
  • 10€ surcharge for the railjet from Venice to Innsbruck

Milan-Venice can also be done on regional trains for a fixed price of €22.15. Runs almost each hour, change in Verona. Timetables on trenitalia.com.
