Is interrail in Portugal recommended?

Best answer by rvdborgt

It will  not always be the cheapest option. Fares are not high, so do the maths before buying a pass.

Compare the prices of regular tickets on www.cp.pt to passes + reservations at €5

Passholder reservations which are compulsory on IC and Alfa Pendular, cannot be done online, only at CP stations in Portugal.

Access to some stations in the Lisbon area is gated, passes do not work gates and staff are often not present.

Even more of an issue to me is that Portugese residents can get a “Green Pass” loaded on to a CP smartcard which is only €20 a month valid for all rail services except Alfa Pendular services which makes the options for visitors, either interrail or buying single/return tickets very poor value in comparison.
