It really depends on what train you want and where you are. Sometimes it's not even possible (eg. Eurostar in London), sometimes it's expensive (eg. €7,50 additional booking fee per person at Dutch ticket offices), sometimes it's the only way to book without extra fees (eg. Spain), sometimes there are long queues (eg. Barcelona-Sants), sometimes it's the only option (eg. Turkey). You are also dependent on whether the train might sell out, which varies depending on the train.
