@Rona It depends of the country, sometimes reservations are fully refundable, sometimes with a fee or sometimes not.

On raileurope.com, you can wait to pay until all reservations are made, but it also depends on the country, the time can be very short. If you don’t pay on time, the reservations are cancelled automatically.

On bahn.de you have 3 hours to cancel them free of charge, after it is no more possible. On oebb.at you can usually cancel reservations free of charge until 15 days before departure.

You can find a good reservations guide here:

I can't even book from Edinburgh to London so unless I buy a separate ticket my whole trip is off!

What date and departure time? LNER can be booked on the LNER website, see Seat61's reservations page mentioned above. In addition, reservations are optional, so no need to buy a separate ticket.

Reservations seem to be pretty compulsory when I look...am really not managing this well.

Please mention date and departure time. I see lots of available trains on 27/12.

There are no mandatory reservations on any day trains in GB. Some of the operators, such as LNER,  send incorrect timetable data, so they appear to have mandatory reservations but in reality they don't. LNER even have a few carriages without reservations. It may of course be wise to book a seat.

I am not finding my way thru this on the screen. Do I make a seat booking thru the reservation, which costs?

I'm not sure what you mean.

Reservations in GB are free of charge if you book them via LNER (their own trains, with seat map, use "Interrail” as booking reference) or GWR (all reservable day trains in GB, no seat map), or at a ticket office in GB. Some operators even accept reservation requests via their social media.
