Reserving first class when it doesn't let me enter the type of ticket and/or says no reservation needed

I was told that if I want to be able to pick a seat and rest, get a first class ticket on eurail and get a reservation.  Now it tells me I don’t need a reservation and there doesn’t seem to be an option to make one even if I don’t need one and it doesn’t even ask about the ticket type.  I assume there are a limited number of first class tickets on any given train.  Does anyone know how I navigate this to put in my ticket type and pick the seat?

The Eurail pass is your ticket. You can purchase 1st class or 2nd class passes.

When seat reservations are mandatory, you must book them before boarding. This extra step can be done on eurail.com (extra fees) or through the railway companies directly. Follow this guide: https://www.seat61.com/interrail-and-eurail-reservations.htm

When reservations are optional or not possible (i.e. suburban or regional train) you can simply hop on and take any free seat.

Before boarding you must always add ("log") the correct train on the Rail Planner app. This gives you a QR code to show to staff = your ticket.

If you'd like better advice, mention route (and ideally departure time) so we can share our experience. :)
