If you had the chance to visit only one of those 2  museums, which one would you choose?
We (2 adults with 2 sons 14 and 24) are staying 2 nights in York and could do the detour to Leeds on the day we leave for Edinburgh or stay the morning in York for the Railway museum.

I haven’t been to the Royal Armouries. Both are very specific subjects though, so I guess it’s more down to which is more interesting to your group.

I would think both will be pretty boring for anyone who’s not interested.

The Railway museum has a massive time advantage, since it’s literally at York station and doesn’t require a detour. Maybe that edges it for York.

I also recommend Fairfax House and the York Castle Museum, and of course a walk around the walls. I didn’t think much of the Jorvik Viking Centre, but it might be more interesting for your 14 yo.

Thanks @ralderton, I’ll check these out too.
Good thing about both Royal Armories and Railway Museum is, that they are free entry. I’m personally not that interested in military history, but husband and sons are, but knowing I can walk out without having lost 30£ makes me give it a try and it might still be captivating.
