San Sebastian to Bilbao - Are there any trains?

We are planning a trip to South West France and North West Spain in the summer around late July early August. I am really struggling to find trains from San Sebastian to Bilbao. Is it better to give up on it and take the bus?

The route is served by Euskotren, a local metro. It’s not included in Interrail, but tickets are cheap.

There are several Euskotren stations in both cities, but the most central in San Sebastián-Donosti is probably Amara, and in Bilbao, Abando is next to the main Renfe station. But check on Google Maps for the one closest to your accommodation.

San Sebastian to Bilbao has trains on the narrow guage Euskotren network which is not included in Interrail. It is quite cheap but that journey is quite long on what are very basic commuter trains.

Quicker and more comfortable buses are available for that journey.

A few very slow connections per day with RENFE are offered, changing at Miranda de Ebro but are ridiculously long.

Thank you both. That is really helpful.

I don’t think I have been on a narrow gauge railway before so it will be a new experience.

Thanks again
