Any feedback as to how the new Schengen rules affect crossing borders by rail when travelling on a UK passport. After entering the Schengen area and lodging fingerprints etc we are led to understand that some other Schengen area countries still want to check biometrics when you cross their border from the first Schengen country. How does it work in reality?

National borders within the Schengen Area don’t have routine checks, but there can be spot checks. Mostly this just involves waving your passport or ID card and nothing else.
I’ve never been asked for biometrics. I’d be surprised if they routinely carry the equipment necessary to do so?
I suppose it’s possible. Anything’s possible - including getting stopped when you’re nowhere near a border - but not something that happens routinely.

Thank you for that. My last extensive European rail journey was in 1975 which involved crossing into the then communist bloc where we were frequently stopped and followed. That was an awfully long time ago
