The return international journey (typically Patras-Ancona or Bari) stretches over two days: does this mean that the journey has to be begun at least two days before the expiry of the pass, or can one simply embark on the last day of validity?

You only need a travel day for the day of departure, so one travel day is enough.

It will only use one travel day. Only the departure date is relevant. The entire journey will have to be competed no later than the end of the validity period, which is 23:59 on the last day.

So, one cannot leave from Patras on the last day of validity. One must leave one day in advance. Thanks for that clarification.

This means that four days of the total validity of a month are taken up with the outward and return journeys in the Adriatic. And if you are sailing from/to Venice, that becomes six days.

No, you only need an active travel day when the ship departs, but the arrival should fall within the validity period of 1 month from the activation of the pass (you have 6 travel days to use in 1 month).
