Hello, after our stay in the Spanish Basque Country, we'll travel with Interrail through France back to the Netherlands from September 5 or 6. We don't want to reserve our seats on the TGV for this, but prefer to travel back to the Netherlands by the 'normal' train like the TER over several days. The question is, do we also have to reserve seats for the 'normal' train? Can anyone let us know? many thanks!

Some regions have mandatory reservations on TERs but it's relatively rare (for now...). Only Grand-Est services to Paris and Normandy have them.

You could travel fully by TER but it will take a while. Not necessarily because the journey is long but more because there are 2-3 daily TERs on some routes… Still doable of course.

Just in case you'll easily find availability on the day on busy routes such as Bordeaux - Paris and Paris - Lille.
