If seat reservations are optional and we choose to not reserve a seat (we have a 1st class Global pass), how do we know where to sit ie. what seats have been reserved and what seats are vacant (not reserved). Just wondering about this and know that the Community can assist.

There will normally be indicators (paper or electronic) for each seat to show for which part of the route it has been reserved.

Electronic displays will often only show the next seat reservation, which will disappear after 15 minutes and then the next reservation will be shown.

Sometimes optional reservations are very recommended (ICEs from Belgium or the Netherlands to Germany), sometimes they're a total waste of money (Switzerland). Feel free to ask and we'll answer.

In general 1st class isn't particularly busy, don't worry. :)
