Trains not appearing in rail planner - help!

Duncan Beattie

Sorry if this is a silly question but I’m new to this and finding it harder than I thought!

I want to book my trip but trains don’t appear when I try to add the journey for example trains from Helsinki to Kemi  and Narvik to Stockholm at the start of July.

Why is that? and what should i do?

Thanks for any help

I don't know why, but as a strategy, you should always (also) look at the national railway's own websites.

And a small anecdote:

Last year I travelled through Sweden with a pass and when planning that trip I came across this message from the SJ (Swedish railways) which I found so funny that I took a screenshot and saved it (it was probably auto-translated):

The journey is preliminary
we release tickets once the planning is complete and we know how the trains will be able to run.
Check back later or choose another journey.

Note that this was a message on 23rd of June, for a journey due to take place on 15 August (just 7 weeks later).

I cannot plan a journey which such non-information so booked the Snälltåget instead and have never regretted that.

Don’t use RailPlanner for planning, it’s not reliable enough. Use the national railway planners for timetables (www.vr.fi for Finland, www.sj.se for Sweden, bahn.com in general) instead.

You only need to add/activate trips on the RailPlanner shortly before boarding a train to get your “ticket”. For booking reservations, no added trip is needed as these two things are completely separate. If a train is still not showing up by then, you can always add trips manually.

This guide might be helpful too: https://www.seat61.com/how-to-use-a-eurail-pass.htm
