I have been going onto the SNCF website each day to see when it will be possible to book up my seat reservations for two journeys I will be making specifically the 17.42 from Gare de Lyon to Chambery on 14th July and the 9.42 from Chambery to Turin on 15th July.  Today for some unknown reason, having checked that the tickets were still not available, I had a look at later dates and to my amazement discovered that the tickets were available for these later dates.  There was just a black hole around the actual dates when I will be travelling.  I then discovered that 14th July is Bastille day but I assume/hope that this is just a coincidence.   Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.

I just tried something which is making me feel a little more nervous.  I went onto the Trenitalia website to look at Frecciarossa trains from Chambery to Turin.  On precisely the dates that are not showing for the SNCF trains, the morning train is displayed but it says that tickets for this train cannot be purchased at the moment.  However for the dates when the SNCF trains are available then tickets for the Frecciarossa morning train can be purchased.

@petershotts Do you travel with an Eurail/Interrail Pass?

You should buy the reservations on raileurope.com and not on SNCF or Trenitalia sites, and only from Paris to Valence in this case.

Passes are only valid in TGV between France and Italy, not on Frecciarossa trains.

Thanks for this.  I am aware that the pass is only applicable on the TGV line from France to Italy   I only went onto the Trenitalia site to see if there might be something up with the line.  The fact that it is not possible to buy tickets on Frecciarossa trains around the same times that there are no TGV trains showing on the SNCF website has got me worried.    That said trains are running later in the day for both Frecciarossa and TGV so I don’t know what might be going on.

As for purchasing my seat reservations I always buy my seat reservations from Rail Europe.  However I first check on the SNCF website to find out when tickets become available.

@petershotts

Engineering works may be planned on this day and the sales will open when the definitive timetable is known. I found only this information on Trainline:

Planned engineering works on the Paris - Milan line in 2026
There will be a reduced service on the Paris - Milan line between May and July 2026.
