Traveling from Switzerland and Italy

Hello. I am traveling from US. Flying into Geneva and going directly to Interlaken where we will stay for 3 nights. We are then traveling to Como for one night and one to Monterosso the next morning. We will be in the Cinque Terre area for two nights. Then, on to Florence for 3 nights, Milan for 1 night and back to Geneva for a night before flying out. Looks like a 6 day pass should cover the train travel. We are traveling with 6 people.

A few questions:

With the reservations, what happens if we miss our train or connection? Can we rebook on the next train? Do we have to pay for seats again if we already had booked them?

Does anyone know if the Eurail pass covers the activities in the Bernard Oberland region? I cannot seem to find what is covered and what are discounts?

Thanks for the advice!

You shouldn’t reserve any train in Switzerland, waste of money. Nobody does it, and trains are frequent and have plenty capacity. Just hop on any train you want to, trains in Switzerland are very punctual and you’ll probably make all connections without any issues.

For Como, stick to the regional trains. Also no need to reserve. You can do a Scenic route via the old Gotthard line, via Göschenen en Airola. Quite recommended

Italian high speed services require reservations, but trains are quite frequent and have plenty of capacity. Usually plenty of last minute availability, so no problem to rebook to a later service in case of trouble and missed connections.

Check this map: https://www.interrail.eu/content/dam/_new-structure/doc/res/See_Switzerland_by_train_2024_Geltungsbereich.pdf to see what lines are included, and which mountain railway or cable car only know a Discount

Hello @maryflo1

When you miss a connection due to a delay or a cancellation, you can exchange the reservations at a ticket office (free of charge) or take the next available trains if reservations are not mandatory.

Sometimes you can also rebook in apps, but it may be complicated for six people.

In Berner Oberland region, you can travel until Mürren (via Grütschalp), Wengen or Grindelwald. You have discounts for some mountain excursions. You can find a area of validity map here:
