Hello everyone,

for several months I have been thinking about traveling during this end of year.

I plan to use my Interrail pass before it expires in November and travel around 1 month, so until december.

But here is the problem: about 1 month before my departure deadline I am telling myself that it might be very cold and that I will not be able to stay outside too long to visit the cities, etc because of that. Especially since I plan to do the northern countries: Denmark, Sweden, Finland and the Baltic countries. Otherwise I was considering doing countries from central and eastern Europe and some southern countries

So I wanted to have feedback from people who traveled in Europe at this time of year (october, november, december or January)

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, the weather will be against you at that time of year in Scandinavia, but you can still have a good trip.

Bear in mind that there are two very different kinds of winter weather. You can have high pressure with blue sky and cold temperatures - cold and crisp 👍. Or you can have grey skies, drizzle, and damp cold, which feels worse. If you can be flexible, you might be able to check the forecast and route around the bad weather?

I can tell you that I was in Prague in January, and it was great. Yes, it was cold, with short daylight hours and short opening hours at some of the attractions. But the crowds were really light, prices low, and I had some really good weather days. (I also had to buy an extra jacket)

Further south, you will get warmer weather of course. Try to avoid coastal resorts, though, because they will be dead out of season. Cities will be great.

Layers, layers and layers.

Get yourself some good isolation in form of thermo clothes, fleece jackets , etc. Good shoes and socks, beanie and gloves. Dress in layers and you'll be fine.

November/December can be magical,  with lights and Christmas markets.

I tend to hop into stores or get a coffee to warm up.

And bring a thermosflask, good for any hot drink.

Don't be scared of the cold. Just try to be prepared for the weather.

I found that Barcelona was great in January. The hotel staff apologised for the "bad weather” but it was sunny and well over 10 degrees, so I was thinking about a summer jacket… the crowds were also light.

I would say Spain and Portugal in general are well worth a visit during the cold months. I went there last January/February and had very pleasant temperature (with the exception of Galicia) and way less tourists than during Summer (except Barcelona; Sagrada Familia).

It’s also the best time of the year to travel spontaneously as trains usually have free spots even on the day of travel.

Agreeing to all the above. Quite a pleasant experience with light crowds and lots of cosy indoor activities.

The only thing I would avoid is travelling in or around the Christmas holidays. (Long distance) Trains will be packed with people going to see family for a few days.
