Desperately trying to make reservations (2nd class Interrailpass) on a train (any) from Girona to Alicante on Wednesday or Thursday 5th or 6th if February.

Tried several apps. Nothing works. Has anyone travelled this stretch? Tips are welcome as I am at the end of my wits

Alright reservations for S(pain)... I'll try to help.

So both interrail.eu and happyrail aren't able to book this train for whatever reason. Could be an issue with the Spanish booking system. Could be solved quickly... or not.

(I also remember Interrail only selling 1st class Euromed reservations? Not sure if that's still valid.)

Looking at seat maps on RENFE (deep in the booking process) following trains have availability:

- Girona - Barcelona-Sants 08:09 - 09:40 -> reservation-free (yay!)

- Euromed Barcelona-Sants - Alicante 10:15 - 15:40 -> 125 seats left in 2nd class = plenty

Book it as soon as you arrive in Spain. Portbou ticket counter should sell it to you. Also possible in Germany (DB counters).

That Euromed stops in Girona beforehand so do ask staff if there's space. Looking at the website, Girona-Barcelona seems fully booked/unavailable.

Feel free to ask anything.

There are actually several problems here in different areas:

  1. Euromed 1101 does Girona to Alicante direct, but Renfe only offers very limited capacity for passengers leaving from Girona. In this limited capacity, 2nd class is full on 5/2 and 6/2, and 1st class is full on 6/2. Not sure if Premium is available (Renfe has gone into maintenance now I'm afraid.)
  2. The Interrail website still doesn't seem to be able to book Euromed trains, although that is supposed to work. I still can't get any prices for any Euromed.
  3. Interrail and Happyrail don't offer regular 1st class in Spain anymore on trains with Premium, such as this Euromed. they now offer Premium (but call it 1st). IMO all 3 options should be offered (2nd, 1st, Premium).
  4. Happyrail doesn't seem to work on 5/2 from Barcelona (no prices), although Renfe shows availability, but I do see prices on Happyrail for 6/2. However, I can't book 2nd class, only Premium.

So online booking doesn't look to good for this train.

@Eurail Community Moderator Could someone please look into points 2 and 3?

Renfe sells most seats on these Euromeds between Girona and Barcelona as Avant. On the 5th there's still plenty of space on the 09:26 AVANT from Girona to Barcelona (seat reservations €4, at a Spanish ticket office), and book the 10:15 Euromed from Barcelona to Alicante - it'll be the same train. If you book the Euromed earlier, when booking the Avant they should be able to select a seat for free (facilitating your switch of seats within the train in Barcelona).

Dear Schelte,

Could you elaborate on your Avant suggestion?

As: yes: I can book a ticket on the euromed train Girona/ Barcelona to Alicante. But: I don want a ticket; i want a seat reservation. So plz send me the website adress you found (and plz take into account that English is not my native language).

Also I don understand your last suggestion (If you book the Euromed earlier, when booking the Avant they should be able to select a seat for free (facilitating your switch of seats within the train in Barcelona). )

Thnx

Thanks all. It worked. I made a reservation B to Alicante. It still puzzles me why the Eurail app sometimes tells me (in red) no tickets for this train and then again (last night first time) reservation 1 or 2bclass.

anyway: i’ am almost on my way

That'll be the Eurail website, which the app forwards you to.

Unfortunately, it happens quite frequently that there's a temporary connection problem between Eurail and Renfe. Also it's possible that someone cancelled a reservation so that a seat becomes available again. For Barcelona to Alicante, I'd guess the former option was the case because when I checked there were a lot of seats from Barcelona.
