travelling without a resercation

We are travelling from London to Leipzig in a couple of months and have reserved seats on Eurostar and the night train from Brussels to Berlin.

In Leipzig we will be having some day trips,  eg Eisenach, on local trains where reservations are not necessary or sometimes even possible. And we will  want the flexibility in our return time.

I am not clear how we will use our passes.  Do we just hop on a train and show our pass? Or do we need to activate the jourey once we are actually on the train?

You always have to add a journey to your pass before you board a train, regardless of whether you have a reservation. Without that, you don't have a valid ticket.

You need to activate the journey before getting on the train. And on the train you just have to show the pass.
