Trip to Switzerland via The Black Forest - any ideas?

To the Eurail/Interrail community,

I’m planning a trip to Switzerland and getting there via The Black Forest (Schwarzwald) in south west Germany.

I would appreciate any travel ideas - I’d be interested in stopping off in a nice town but I’m really keen to get outdoors and do some hiking. Anywhere with easy train access would be good.

Thanks,

Felix

Freiburg im Breisgau is the most accessible town, though might be more of a city.

You have a nice lake at the end of the Titisee - Seebrugg railway (coming from Freiburg is easiest).

The Offenburg - Singen railway is very scenic, though be aware of closures from September.

i would recommend the Schwarzwaldbahn, Offenburg - Singen.  If you look at the route I am sure there are many internet resources for hikes from and between stations.

Freiburg in Breisgau is OK IMO - not great.

I've stayed in Hornberg on that route and that was quite nice; quite some options for walking in the area.

I stayed in Forbach (Germany, not France) in the north of the Black Forest a couple of years ago and that was quite pleasant. Small town charm, but lots of hiking routes into the woods and fine transport connections with the quirky tram-train Karlsruhe-Freudenstadt. Ideal for a brief stop or a long weekend.
