1st class pass not accepted on german train

Just boarded a train from Munich hbf to Salzburg and present my first class ticket. It is not accepted on westbahn train. They said eurail only pay them For second class.

That is correct.

They should have offered you an upgrade for both upper class compartments, this can also be pre-booked on their website. IMO the upgrade isn’t really worth it, both because the accommodation isn’t that different and there are OBB/DB trains on all the routes they serve with 1st class included.

Westbahn only accept both 2nd and 1st class passes in 2nd class, it is listed as such in the country pages on the website and on your pass under the More-Rail Network Guides section.

I'd be curious what the reasoning is behind "eurail only pay them For second class”. AFAIK Westbahn is the only operator that does this.

It would be interesting to know what exactly they get as an Open Access operator.

It is not even as if they offer anything particularly special in 1st class.
