Confused about printed reservations for online pass


I purchased my electronic passes (for two senior travelers) and put them into the Rail Planner app.

Then I went to the website and purchased my reservations for three different days.  I was able to print those reservations.

When I go to board the train, do I just show the reservations?  Or do I somehow need to show the pass on my phone?  I don’t understand how to bring up the pass.  It wants me to add Trips and Journeys, and I don’t really understand that since I have my reservations already - which are already in the app but not part of a “Journey.”  Oh, help!  I’m so confused and worried that the pass won’t work when we are there.

One more question.  If I’m traveling to and from a destination on the same day, both trips only count as one day, right?

Your pass is your ticket. You have to add each train ride you make to your trip and activate the travel day.

But please do these two steps just before you actually take that train.

On the train, you show both - your pass and (if required) your reservation.

Oh, bless you.  That link is so helpful.  I haven’t traveled with a Eurail pass since they were paper, and we had unlimited days, so you just showed your pass and made sure you had reservations if needed.  Being compulsive, before I go I wanted to be sure that the QR code of the pass will show up, but it looks like I can’t actually do that until I’m ready to board a train.  

The link explains well the difference between a Trip (a whole itinerary) and a Journey (which I would have called “leg” or “individual ride” or something different, but ok.)  And it explains that it’s just preparing for a bunch of different options, which is something that a compulsive person like me would do.  Happily, I didn’t yet slide the slider to add any of them to my pass, but it looks like you can undo that as well if something changes.

I’m assuming I still need to show my printed reservation as well on trains that require reservations.  Those are all in order.

Just note that you should use the slider only as soon as you are sure you take a certain train. 

If a slider is activated on a travel day beforehand and you are not able to travel for whatever reason, you lose a travel day for nothing. In other words. You can't deactivate a leg at the planned day of travel and get the travel day back.

In general, you won’t need to show reservations for most trains, as the system already “knows” that you have reserved the seat.  The main instance when you might want to have the reservation printed is when someone else is sitting in your seat and you need something to wave at them to show it’s yours.  On some “reservation mandatory” trains you may also want to have the reservation to hand for checking.

Having said above that you don’t *need* to show them, I always have them printed out as I’m also a bit compulsive.  I like to have a printed copy of travel, entertainment and accommodation tickets with me when going away.  It helps me to know that in a trip with 15 or 20 different reservations I haven’t accidentally forgotten to actually book one of them.

Another question on the Slider.  One day, we will be taking a train from Madrid to Cordoba in the morning and then another from Cordoba to Madrid later that day.  Is there any issue with adding both journeys to the same day of our pass?  Do we just have to make sure that the dates on the journeys are the same?

This is certainly possible: you can take as many trains as you want each travel day, including backtracking. Remember you'll need seat reservations for these (bookable through raileurope.com)

I always print everything out since the day we stood in line behind a couple at a Jamaica resort where the hotel could not find their reservation in the system.  It also helps in case phone reception or wifi aren’t working well.  Thanks again.  It appears that nearly all of our “voyages” in Spain will require reservations.  I guess gone are the days where you just ran for the next train that left for wherever!
