Does the two-month continuous pass have to be activated on the first of a month? Or can I start the two-month period on any day?

You can start it on any day and then it will be valid for two months from that date on.
I want to start my journey on the 21 of august and travel for about 20 days until the middle of september. A 1-month continuous pass would be enough even when I travel in both months, august and september?

Yes, it is enough as long as your trip is within a time frame of one month from the start date of your pass.
