If I was to buy a 3 month pass today and do I activate it daily or it just a straight 3 months then it expires , hope that makes sense

With a mobile pass, you activate it once (within 11 months of purchase) and then it is valid for 3 months straight. You do however have to add any trains you use to the pass.
With a paper pass, you choose the first day of validity when you buy it. You also have to add each train to the travel diary.
