As the title says!I assume that I don’t validate my paper pass by punching little date stamps on it or whatever but just double checking before we leave next week.

No. PLus that this never ever was needed for INTERnazionale biglietti
Plus that this method has about disappeared the last yrs-it may vary per regione. Its now most often newer technique-smartcarte or the like. Also only-if at all-applies to regionale treni-not the fast frecce etc. Having just arrived in IT today. Its still wearing masks and there also seems in some trains to be separate entry/exit doors and not all seats should be used.
