Hi! I am planning my first trip via train in Europe. I would like to confirm few items,

Here is our itinerary for full month of February

  • Day 1 : Oslo - Bergen, extra 12nok for seat reservation
  • Day 2: Paris-Geneva, this trip for my dates, which is 2 months from now, is showing 338 euros. If I have EUrail pass, do I just have to pay just 39 euros for a seat reservation? Is this 39 euros fixed, or it can increase when its closer to booking time? Just looking at the price of the ticket on the SNCF website, i.e., 338 euros, an EU rail pass makes so much sense if I have to pay just 39 euros. I hope I am not missing anything.
  • Day 3: Geneva-Zurich, extra for seat reservation; I am not sure how much it was not clear on the eurail website.
  • Day 4: Zurich - Chur - Tirano - Milan - Venice, for Bernina express do i have to book tickets from the actual website, i.e., 32chf? For a high-speed train in Italy, how much do I have to pay for seat reservations? Where do I find this information?
  • Day 5: Venice - Rome

I am planning on buying the Eurail 1st class flexible pass (5 days in 1 month pass)

My question is: Once I buy my Eurail pass, where do I book seats for these segments?

Thank you in advance!

Day 2 Paris - Genève. Yes, the reservation fee on the direct TGV is fixed, until the train sells out. You can reduce it to €10 or €20 by taking the train only as far as Bellegarde, then changing there for a local train to Geneva.

Day 3 No reservation needed in Switzerland. Just jump on any train

Day 4 No reservation needed. You can optionally pay a reservation fee on the Bernina Express, but it’s not worth it. Just sit in the unreserved cars- the windows are big and is usually quieter than the reserved coach!

Milan-Venice is €13 reservation fee on the Frecciarossa. Best to do this on the Rail Europe website. Same with Venice-Rome.

Good info on reservation costs and where to buy them: https://www.seat61.com/interrail-and-eurail-reservations.htm

Thank you for your response and the seat61 link Raldeton.

I have one more question -- If i buy the pass today and reserve the  trains today, could i change the reservation without any extra payment if my plan changes during my travel when I am there after 2 months?

TGV reservations can be fully refunded or exchanged without costs.

Trenitalia reservations are only partially refundable but can be exchanged without costs. It's easiest if you book those on raileurope.com. You can also manage these reservations there and they don't have extra booking fees.

Thanks RVDBORGT for answering my question. all you guys are legends. Thanks.
