It's covered if you are holding a global pass. No additional pass / ticket needed.
You do just need a mandatory reservation when crossing the border (Switzerland / Italy) in a long-distance train (or for long distance trains in Italy). No reservation needed for RE trains from Lugano to Milano.
A Eurail Global Pass is probably the way to go for the entire trip. It covers trains all across the country + boats on Lake Thun and Brienz.
