Eurail Pass into Zermatt

About Zermatt Täsch: do you have a flexi or continuous pass? With a flexi doesn’t pay off to use it.

maybe there is a Gästekarte like most regions in Switzerland have, then that train ride should be included. Ask you accommodation about this

The main reason people stay in Taesch rather than Zermatt is that they have driven there; it is the closest you can get to Zermatt before the blanket no-cars rule applies. Unless you’ve seen a particularly good deal on accommodation, Zermatt itself would seem the more logical place to sleep if you arrive by train.

*EDIT: of course though, if you can access free local train rides though your accommodation as MartinM suggests, largely disregard the above

Yes, the idea for Taesch is the more reasonable lodging fees.  I have asked host and they aren’t even aware of a direct train from Milan to Taesch….

There is no direct train but you have to change in Brig/Visp.

if you want to save money from Milano to Brig/Visp. Then take a regional train to Domodossola and there change to another regional or EC train. Then you don’t have to pay for the reservation… if you are two, will save you 22€

Thank you!  Only reason was considering a Eurail Pass is after skiing then doing a couple of different destinations in Italy.  Do you still recommend regional trains?

Well if you know your approximate route then we can advise you if an Eurail will pay off or not.

Italian regional trains are not very comfy but if you are trying to save money then they are OK. Long distance trains are quite comfy.

I logged that into the Eurail Pass and was given 10 days travel during a 2mnth period for about $360 dollars.  But it couldn’t get the answer about the individual daily trips from Tasch into Zermatt can be part of that ticket or have to pay separately because unique train and not part of the Eurail system.

Does the Eurail require separate reservations?  Hearing those are separate fees too….

The train between Täsch and Zermatt is included in Eurail but the price for a return ticket is 16.40 CHF so you need to calculate if it is worth buying a Eurail pass to include those travels or not.

So for your planned route you would need reservations for Milan to Rome, Rome to Venice, Venice to Brescia and probably also (if you want to do it quick) Milano to Brig/Visp. Means that would be another 41€ per person (second class) for reservations. 
So you would be already almost on 450€ per person. But with the 10 day pass you can also use it for your Täsch-Zermatt rides (just doesn’t really pay off).

I would suggest buying single tickets (check on Trenitalia), or switch to a 4 day interrail ticket for the Longer trips and buy regional trains tickets or saver tickets for the Venice-Brescia, Brescia-Milano and Täsch-Zermatt routes… 

If Täsch - Zermatt is 17€ return it doesn’t pay off buying a pass day which costs you 40€ per day…

Vnz-(change Verona)-Brescia and even more Br->Mil can easily be done on regional trains-which are not even that less comfy, those to Mil are as TreNord. But can also use the Frecce-see on.

From Mil to R and R->Vnz use the superfast Frecce trains, surcharge for RES is 10€ IF done whilst in IT @ counter and if you cannot stand the fear to maybe have to use an earlier/later (most run hourly) via oebb.at

Well, @mcadv is a bus lover so has maybe a different feeling of comfort but Trenitalia are some of the worst regional trains in Central Europe. Starting from the disgusting toilets in the old trains (not mentioning the often dirty windows - either not cleaned or full of graffiti), to the new trains which are designed so bad, that many seats have not even a window view…

You have mentioned it twice, the Tasch-Zermatt return for $17.  What is that referring to?  Part of my question is if there would be separate fees or will the Eurail Pass cover the back and forth?

That 17  euro refer to the NORMAL return ticket price:

If you have an Eurail ticket, there will be no additional fees.
But if you plan to buy a 10 day pass, one day would cost you around 40 euro → it is no good value to use it for a trip that costs you as a standard ticket 17 euro…

Best to write your routes down in an excel sheet and then check what will be the cheapest option for you.
For saver fares check trenitalia / SBB. For Italy if you go without EUrail also worth to check prices of .italo - it is a private train operator, you could use from Milano to Rome and maybe Rome to Venice (if price is cheaper). Attention: this is only worth to check if you DON’T use Eurail. Eurail is NOT valid on these .italo services.
