Hello! I’m trying to figure out the travel day scenario and how it works. When I do the planner it says I should need 4 days, but then takes me to purchase 5 days. Right now we are looking at doing the following 4 trips. 


Rome → Bologna (Thursday mid day)

Bologna → Rome (Friday morning)

Rome → Florence (Monday morning) 

Florence → Venice (Wednesday morning)

 

Based on this I assume I just need a 4 travel day in one month. But it isn’t helping me enough to explain it properly. 
 

Additionally, is it better to go pass vs individual. Our travel friends did first class pass. But we have an extra day of travel over them.

The planner function on the website is not very good.

You can just count the number of days you'll be travelling, which is 4 in your case.

What's better depends on your definition of “better”. If you mean cheaper, then you should do your own math. Check regular ticket prices on www.trenitalia.com and compare with a pass plus reservations (€13 for a Frecce fast train, €3 for an intercity, no reservations for a regional train).

Do take into account that regular advance fares usually cannot be changed or refunded and with a pass you're flexible. Pass reservations in Italy are almost always available, even on the day.
