I was gifted a Eurail Global Pass, 1st class, for the duration of my trip to Europe. On my itinerary I have a lot of countries, including Italy but not Greece. I’ll be traveling in late fall.

I have some room in my itinerary. I wasn’t planning on traveling to Greece, but I like the idea of a free “cruise”-like experience. But, since I have this pass, I’m wondering if I should do this with the ferries?

My question is, what are the ferries like? If I have the opportunity to use them for free, is it worth making room in my itinerary for it?

Ferries like that aren't exactly cruise ships. They're mostly old and have less facilities.

Of course if you'd like to take one do it but since Greece isn't even on your list I wouldn't bother. There are much better 1st class trains :)

As a tip : 1st class optional reservations can be obtained free of charge in Germany, Austria, Czechia, Hungary,... through the Austrian Railway ÖBB ! Go to tickets.oebb.at, add Eurail as a discount and select one-way tickets.

Seat reservations are generally cheaper when bought elsewhere than on eurail.com. Have a look at

Feel free to ask further questions.

As well as not being very high quality - especially the ones across the Adriatic, they’re also not free. The railpass often just gives a discount, and that discount is usually only for the base fare - not the taxes and cabins. .
